Hung Rudder and Elevators |
|
|
I verified the minimum clearance between rudder tip and VS as 3/16". Closer to 1/4" in most places. I discovered that the bottom rode end bearing had been scratched. It wasn't very deep but certainly not worth taking the risk of it failing. I removed it and will replace it. I installed the electric trim servo and rod. The rod had to be shortened, which I did with the band saw. I fabricated the hinge wire with the bent end that I safety-wired to the spar per the drawing. I then proceeded to balance the elevator. The Left elevator is aft-heavy with the electric trim servo installed. It required 2.6oz placed 5.5" forward of the hinge line to balance. The right elevator is very foreward-heavy. I'm guessing it's due to the epoxy I used to mold and secure the fairing to the counterweight shape. To balance it, I placed 6.85oz, 8" aft of the hinge line. When I bolted the elevators together, I was able to balance them by putting 4.75 oz, 8.5" aft of the hinge line. |
