Brief Description:  Aft Fuselage 4 – Assembly and Drilling

With the F706 bulkhead not installed, I final cut the four lower stringers. I likely would have been able to build them per the drawing instructions and been just fine, but the inconsistency of the instructions had me a bit spooked and other builders as well. The total length of the stringers are pretty well established by the pre drilled hole locations and dimensions of the side skins. I had initially left them a ¼” long thinking I would be making some adjustments, but that was not the case. In addition, the end trim isn’t particularly critical either. The flange facing the skin on each end runs the entire length of the stringer and the cutback is just to avoid the bulkheads at either end.

Here is the problem I had. The lower stringers runs along the seam between the side skin (F773) and the thicker tail cone skin (F779). I had initially clecoed the two skins together along this seam when assembling the aft fuselage – and it was a tough fit like the rest of this area. But with the undrilled stringer in place you cannot have the two skins clecoed together. My problem was that without the clecos the two skins would not align. I tried clamps and straps to compress this area without success. So what I did was remove the lower stringers, cleco the rest back together, level up the assembly, check with the plumb bob, and then drill the upper stringers and aft tail cone area. The idea is to get the fit up as good a possible, and then maybe with a strap or two I can align the two skins with the lower stringer in place. Hopefully with the upper stringers drilled/clecoed, and match drilling the aft end with the two skins clecoed together the whole thing will settle into place. We’ll see.
