Brief Description:  Crotch Bracket Prep 1

There is no match-hole alignment on the crotch brackets that attach to the F-716 ribs and seat skin. That means you need to align, clamp, and drill these things. The parts, drawings, and instructions come separately – I supposed that they sell these for retro fit as well. The plans start with modifications to the seat skin that are already complete on my skins. Maybe this design came after the initial RV7/7A design.

The plans have you locate a plumb line for the crotch bracket 3/32” off one of the screw holes to start. You then clamp everything together and start drilling. I went with another approach that I picked up from Ed Lynn’s build site. Ed is the brother of a friend of mine (who is also building a RV7A). I did get to meet Ed at Oshkosh this year, and I frequently consult both of their build logs for tips.

Ed’s process is to draw a centerline on the aft bracket flange that mates with the seat skin and then sight the line through the two holes in the skin. Camp, drill, and cleco these two holes with the sub assembly of just the two F 716 seat ribs, the seat skin, and the one aft crotch bracket. Then match drill the holes in F716 ribs using the aft crotch bracket holes. Then add the forward crotch bracket with the 1/8” spacer, clamp, and drill away. Ed said to let the flange angle of the bracket determine the orientation of the bracket. Mine came out not very plumb on the right side which I’m sure is fine. I think when I do the left side I will manipulate the flange some if the bracket is not plumb.
