Brief Description:  Aileron Hinge Brackets

With the left wing in the cradle and the top skin riveting complete, it is time to complete and install the aileron hinge brackets. These beefy assemblies of plate and extruded angles come with their own drawings and fastener bags for some reason. The assembly takes some thought and attention to countersinking location.

Previously I had assembled and smoothed off the edges for all four hinge bracket assemblies (while procrastinating instead of working on the fuel tanks). With the wing flipped and in the cradle, you can attach these easily. Right off the bat, I found a problem with the inboard hinge bracket assembly. The beefy angles that sandwich the two plates would not mate up with the existing holes in the rear spar assembly. One angle or the other would line up, but not both. Attaching the angles individually revealed that the longer one was mis-drilled by Vans. An email to Van’s tech support confirmed this and they said they would ship me a couple new angles (same problem on the right wing).

I did match drill the outer hinge bracket to the right wing and then disassembled to debur and countersink. I then prepped these parts for priming.
