Brief Description:  Splice Plate

Per the plans, I drew the splice plate rivet sight line ½” from the edge on both parts. This line guides the location of the splice plate by sighting the line through the skin rivet holes. I also used my fancy marking tool to draw a line down the middle of the rib flange to indicate where the fasteners will be with the rib flange flush with the skin edge. This line doesn’t really do anything other than show how well you did after drilling and disassembling the parts. Next I bent the splice plate around the right wing inboard LE rib. This doesn’t seem like it does much to form the splice plate, but it does help. I then placed the rib in position, and clamped it up as best I could for drilling the rib to spar intersection. I used my 12” long drill bit to drill up from underneath through the spar and into the rib flange. After drilling the rib attachment holes, I clecoed it in place. With the clecos in, the rib is now constrained at the bottom, but free to move otherwise. After struggling to get the splice plate and rib inserted and adjusted, I added a little lubrication (Boelube) between the parts to allow for the many adjustments required to get everything lined up. This worked well – no hammers were required. Once the splice plate is aligned relative to the skin (by aligning the drawn line and the skin holes), only the rib needs adjustment. I did this by measuring the distance from the inboard edge of the aligned splice plate and the rib web. Since the rib is already constrained at the base this sets the measurement. All that is needed is to ensure the distance is the same for the rest of the rib. Once aligned, I drilled all the holes adding clecos as I went. Next, I matched drilled the rest of the right side LE. Once complete, I took the straps off and moved them to the left side LE. I then took apart the splice plate and rib to see how it went. Not perfect, but all the rib rivet holes looked good relative to edge margin and proximity to the web.
I then moved over to the left wing to repeat
