Brief Description:  Rudder and Stab T.E. Spar Hinge Line

Vans manual instructs you to build the vertical stab THEN build the rudder spare to mate up to the hinges. I found this to be problematic.

1. Using American Standard measurement, IT IS VERY EASY to accumulate what is called "tolerance creep". If you are measuring long distances in small increments and add a 64th here and a 32nd there, the next thing you know, you are 3/16th's off......

2. On the RV-4 vertical stab spare, the hinge spacing is critical and the last set of hinge brackets are at 43 and 29/32's. Well, I ended up 3/16's south of that station and did not discover the mistake until the vertical stab was complete and I went to mate the rudder spare to the stab spar hinge schedule. (I needed the practice any way right?)

Hard lesson learned early! Any parts that need to match up with one another, build the controlling part first!......In the case of the rudder, lay out the hinge line on both the vertical stab spare and the rudder spar. Drill the holes in the rudder spare, THEN build the vertical stab T.E. spare to match the rudder. If you are building an RV-7 or 8, the kit is CNC pre-punched and this is done for you BTW....... On the -4, the manual will set you up for failure! Read the drawings carefully, hold the big parts in your hands and visualize how it needs to look and think ahead!

Also, buy a good, long, metal measuring stick. The measurement was 43 and 29/32's. I had a 36 inch yard stick! I used two different measuring tools butted up against each other to lay out the hinge drill schedule. Big Mistake! Get real...buy the correct tool for job.
