Brief Description:  Elevator Counterweights Part 3

As near as I could figure, I used just around four pounds filled to the top. Ron also suggested having a lit oxy torch in hand to direct the lead into the nooks and crannies which was totally correct. I would highly recommended it for this method because the lead solidifies almost instantly and doesn’t make for a smooth pour…and make sure the tip is level! The torch keeps the lead fluid and keeps it flowing nicely. Once it cooled down, I smoothed out any high spots. The side with the steel plate was perfect. On the second pour I put the plate on the top side that you would see. As it is I’ll have to smooth it out the first pour with a little bit of filler. A note about safety. I did this pour in my shop with plenty protective equipment, including a respirator. It was too cold to do it outside. Once it was all done, I opened the door and let it air out for a good bit.

In the end each elevator balanced just a bit nose-heavy, exactly as I wanted it.
