Brief Description:  Horizontal Stabilizer Front Strut Part 1

I started in on the front strut for the stab. The bottom of the strut has a U-shaped piece of plate the bottom bracket slides into. I didn't have and .035 sheet, but I did have some .040 so that is what I used. I made a simple bending block out of a scrap piece of radiused .100 stock and it worked perfect. I cut the strut end to receive the piece, but I left the strut material in one piece in case I screwed this up, and I did. If I were to cut them to the approximate length I would have 10 inches of scrap left, but I'm glad I left it in one piece! That will leave me with some learning curve material.

My fist try welded fine, but the bolt hole radius was right at the 2D margin with the bracket all the way in. In other words, the U-shaped pocket wasn’t deep enough. I cut that end off and tried another method to make the slot in the streamlined tubing and that didn’t work as I had hoped. So, back to plan A. I made another slot, this time a little deeper so the sheet stock seats further into the strut. I was happy on this try. Next is to weld it up. If I don’t screw this up, then I’ll cut the tubing to length and make the other end.
