Brief Description:  Welding the Stab Bushings Pt. 2

One of the things that have to be done on the bushings is to grind or file them so they are 1 in. long. They are purposely left long for welding, then trmmed to size. As I was grinding the bushings with the air grinder I thought that iI really didn't have a way to ensure the bushing was flat, level with the surface, even on both sides and one inch long. Using calipers is easy, but that only checks the dimension and not the angle relative to the front or rear spars or the reveal on each side.

I came up with a sort of go-no go gage out of an aluminum block for the bushings. I made one side so it would just slide over the 7/8ths spar and a larger gap 1 in wide on one side. This way I can be sure I'm not going too wild on the filing/grinding and both sides are equal length and perpendicular to the spar. While I was at it I made the other end to accomodate 3/4in tubing to measure the seat belt attach bushings.
