Brief Description:  Engine Cowling Part 5

I’m going to say that installing and adjusting the Piper style latches is a royal PITA. Trying to stack washers to adjust the top latch wasn’t easy. The washers wanted to fall all over, rolling into every nook and cranny in the shop. Once that was done I had to install the Southco fasteners. The fasteners that came with the latch kit were unusable. They were WAY too long…by at least 1/8th of an inch. I figure someone was just trying to dump their unused inventory in the kit. Let me tell you, just a TINY fraction of an inch in length means the difference between turning it or not being able to turn the latch. I spent a lot of money and hours and hours of time on the computer and phone trying to find the correct length of fastener. Southco doesn’t do retail sales and their main customers want you to either buy a minimum of $100 worth of product or 100 of one item. That wasn’t helpful. Lots of stories here, but I finally found the correct length of fastener.
