I made the spacer, made sure everything was aligned and riveted the door in place. It turned out exactly how I wanted it! The spacer did its job and the door was flush with the surrounding metal. The door has a slight curve to it too so it blends in exactly to the curve of the top cowling. YAY! Something that actually turned out well.
