Brief Description: Firewall Station Part 2
|
|
Now comes the fun part, and that is fitting the firewall station to the fuselage, while maintaining the engine alignment. Believe it or not, this was pretty tough. I had to cope/fit the bottom two legs of a wobbly almost pentagon while maintaining the proper angle and ensuring all the measurements were within 1/16th. The engine had to be exactly in the right place and level, perfect in the fuselage centerline. Then, I would grind on each leg a little at a time to slowly bring it into tolerance, maintain alignment with the top bushing and not bump everything in the process. It was hard...and I bumped it a number of times, requiring a reset. I finally got it really, really close, but I was at my mental limit and it was going on 6am. It was at the point where everyone has been at one point or another to make dumb mistakes, so I quit for the day. I have it just about ready for tack welding. A fresh day and it should be locked down for good. To be honest, I don't know if this really saved any time by buying a ready-made mount. But it really made me appreciate the fact that I had held the building tolerances close so I had a solid base to work from and wasn't just making things fit. Off to bed...
