Brief Description:  Tail Post Part 1

Well, after getting the infamous Station M done, it is time to move to the tail post. This was a little more difficult than I thought. I took my time and made sure the top and bottom fuselage halves were aligned properly. Fore, aft, distance between the two and centerline. After doing a preliminary fit of the tail post on the bottom longerons, I started to fit the top longerons. I about had a fit when I saw a 3/16ths gap on the front of the tail post where the two upper longerons come together. I just couldn't believe it! I had to make it up somehow and I certainly didn't want to make the plane shorter, even if it was such a small amount. I just knew I measured everything correctly when I built the halves, but there I was. I called fellow BH builder extraordinaire Dan Shilling and explained the problem to him and asked for suggestions. He had some difficulties similar to this in his project and told me how he had dealt with them. As I was talking to Dan, I went over the plans and decided since the tail spring support tube dies into that cluster it wouldn't be a big deal. But I was still amazed that I had flubbed it so badly. More on this in Part 2.

As a side note, I put paper towel plugs in the longerons to keep the filings and grinding goodies out of the longerons. It worked really well, especially the lower longerons because they slope downhill in the jig. I am oiling the lowers and I just didn't want extra filings migrating all around the tubes.

That really kool magnetic level is a gift from my son, Thomas. Very handy...thanks Thomas!!!
