Brief Description: Working on the fuselage top
After many months, I finally started work on the fuselage again! I fit the remaining diagonal tubes, working from the tail forward. Because of the different size of the wing spar carry-through tubes, I have to elevate the longerons to fit the tubes properly. The longerons are 3/4 inch, the aft spar carry-through is 7/8ths inch and the front spar carry-through is 1 3/8ths.
In order to make up the height difference, I had to make up some shims. I went to the local steel shop and went through their remnant pile. I got two strips of 1/16th, one 1/8ths flat bar and one 1/4in flat bar. For today, all I needed was 1/16th shims to compensate for the 1/8th difference for the aft spar. Half of 1/8th is 1/16th, so I took the 1/16th sheet stock and cut 4 inch strips using my shear. The shear is a Harbor Freight clone of the Beverly throatless shear. I guess in China it would be pronounced BevAHree. I cut the shims and worked them a bit so they would lay flat. I put those under the longerons all the way around. That will make the centerline of the tubes match up fine. I didn’t do the large tube yet. When I do, I’ll elevate all the tubes to compensate for the difference. I’m saving that for the next day. The longerons will have to go up to 5/16ths, the aft spar carry-through ¼ inch and the diagonals 3/8ths. It will be fun. I have to admit, it took awhile to get back into the swing of things.
