Brief Description:  Firewall Flange Modification

Well, to match the slope of the instrument panel I needed to work the aluminum angle for the firewall. I tried at first to make it work with some oak blocks cut at an angle and a soft hammer, but the back radius needed to be worked too. As the metal moved around it distorted the firewall. I drilled out the rivets and removed the top flange. Using the oak form blocks, soft-blow hammer, shrinker and stretcher I was able to set the flange at the proper angle. The flange angle changes from the center to the sides due to the changing slope of the instrument panel so it took quite a bit of fussing to get it just so. But once the work was done I reinstalled the flange and all is good. The only unknown is the difference of the slope of the engine cowling where it meets the firewall to the nosebowl, but that should be negligible…at least I hope!
