Brief Description: Drilling Wing Spars
Well, I finally did it. After all the wringing of hands, I finally drilled the wing spar attach points. I secured everything and clamped it so it wouldn't move. I even made a small drilling guide like Bearhawk Aircraft loans to builders. The guide was really of limited use, only good for the rear fittings.
I made sure that things couldn’t move and just drilled, reaming to final shape, then deburring. I was fortunate to have step reamers for both the front and rear fittings which helped a lot. On the front spar I clamped a small square to the face of the spar. The blade gave me a great reference as to how square I was to the mount face. I took it very slow and methodically did the rear two first, then the front two. Just for giggles I measured the wing tips to the tail post and was within 1/8th inch. Everything else is just as it will be, I can't get anymore accurate. I measured, checked and rechecked. It’s drilled, fitted and now no looking back. Next project is to fit the wing struts!
A special thanks to Rob Taylor who saved all his wing drilling supplies in a clear tote, complete with instructions, and loaned them to me!
