Brief Description:  Windshield Channel - Part 2

After looking at the setup, I decided to make a practice part using just .030 mild steel. It turned out just great, but I had to try .032 4130A, the same stuff I made my ribs out of. Besides, I had a half sheet left over, so I have to do something with it.

Even though the 4130 is condition A, it’s still harder to work than plain mild steel. The second try (first with 4130A), didn’t turn out so well. I had some slippage in the sheet metal brake so the blank wasn’t as nice as the first. So to salvage something out of the blank, I tried a few things out on the second blank to see how to work the metal. The learning experience was good, the part not so much. But, I did learn what to do and what not to do using my setup. The third try worked really well. The 4130A part was as good, if not better than the mild steel part. It does have a bow to it, but that’s easy to fix. I’ll trim off the excess on the bottom edge and weld it in place…tomorrow.
