Brief Description:  Wing Attach Fittings Part 12

I am very satisfied with how the day turned out. I had all the fittings fitted (sounds weird), except for some fine-tuning, but needed to move the front left spar fitting forward a bit to accommodate the rear spar fitting. I thought I would have to do the right side as well, but turns out it was just fine…amazing what some sleep can do. I unbolted the left wing, cut the tack welds, then realigned the whole mess. Once that was done, one more check front and rear with the water level and laser.

The moment of truth had arrived…tack the dreaded wing fittings in place. I did, then I rechecked all the measurements. I was astonished. The variance along the entire span, tip to root, root to tip, tip to tip was less than 1/16th of an inch. The wing tips to the tail post were within 1/8th of an inch, and that may change with the fitting of the wing struts when the final dihedral is set. I even did one more check that I didn’t ever do and that was the wing root to wing root with the digital level. The pictures say it all. That water level stuff is pretty accurate.

All the hard work in keeping accurate had paid off. To be honest, I have no idea how anyone fits the spar fittings to the fuselage without the wings. There are ways, but this is by far the most accurate…using what you have. The last bit of adjusting is making the wing struts, but after that there is no more fabrication of basic structure and a HUGE milestone. YAY!!!! Now, on to designing the skylight.
