Brief Description: Fuselage Brake Cylinder Mounts Part 1
Today I spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out a way to accurately line up and weld the brake cylinder mounts to the fuselage. I saw various methods, but none seemed very easy. I decided to use a 3/16ths rod to line them up. I saw on the plans the edge of the 3/16ths bolt hole in the mount is 1/4 in from the top of the bottom fuselage tubes. I strung the mounts on to a straight piece of rod and then put spacers that equal 1/4in on the diagonal tubes on the fuselage bottom. That gave me the proper angle. Then I needed to figure out a way to have them spaced accurately. I measured the bottom attach point of the brake cylinder and it was just a bit over 5/16ths. I cut two pieces of scrap steel that is 3/8ths wide and about an inch long. I drilled a small hole in the end so a piece of welding rod could pass through. This kept the spacer from falling out until I could get a clamp on them. Once that was done, the next step was to center the mounts to the rudder pedals so the brake cylinders are vertical…but how? Continued on next entry!
