I have glassed together the two halves and finished them inside and out; well, they still need sanding. West Systems Epoxy is the way to go. This stuff does exactly what you ask of it.
The cowling modification-although time consuming-seems like the only way to go. It will allow much better access and, in my opinion (which is really the only one that matters) looks better as well.
