Brief Description:  Sport Air Workshop -- Fabric covering -- part III

Also for metal parts, Poly-Tone doesn’t like sticking to anything other than base poly products. For metal parts she has found if the epoxy (two part) primer is still tacky when sprayed (finger just sticks) then sprayed with Poly-Tone you can have a near a perfect color match and the paint does adhere nicely. Trick is to have two spray guns ready to go. Primer, then Poly-Tone. For the color match, use a white primer as the base.It took a while to get the hang of to do the rib stitching (Tree, pond, log… ) but finally caught on. Found by 20 stitches I had a rhythm to it. Before I go near my project, I plan to make up a EMT conduit practice piece to get the rhythm going, then move over to the plane. For a few moment I was relieved to realize I have an aluminum wing, then remembered I still have to rib stitch the tail feathers!Fellow next to me was doing his own style of stitch. I had started, gotten confused, watched him and really got confused, flipped open the book and started back up. Took me a while to get into the rhythm of it.Hadn’t thought much about it, but fellow next to me commented he was taking the class for fun as he had already recovered many planes. I’m always learning, but he just had his own method and Lynn had commented the FAA approved method stitch had changed over the years, didn’t dwell on it. Well when we cleaned up the weekends work over the “wing” I discovered my screwed up stitches came apart with no effort. Darn! Scary part was pulling up the material (which this other fellow had done) and every stitch pulled apart! A good reason to make up a practice piece for my DAR to pull apart to inspect my work. For us in Texas… local distributor is Chip and Berni. Chip was assisting in the class and a wealth of information. Last time I did anything with fabric was a model plane was well over 30 years ago! I still remember the fumes from the Dope!
