SportAir Workshop, March 4&5th Dallas – Fabric coveringSportAir Workshop, March 4&5th Dallas – Fabric covering.Spent the weekend at the SportAir workshop in Dallas, excellent class. Lynn was our instructor for the class. Years of covering and painting was very apparent from her presentations. Yes, she is also in the EAA Fabric Covering video which she did a few years back (originally on VHS, now on DVD). Lots of details in the class, this is just a few comments from the weekend:Class focused on the Poly-Fiber process. Lynn did discuss the four different methods of fabric covering and pros and cons to each. She likes the Poly-Fiber process, has used it with great success for years.Any metal or wooden stringers in contact with the Poly materials need a two-part coating. Basically epoxy coating to withstand the MEK in the Poly-Tak. In the video is a section of Lynn covering a rudder. Well when Ron Alexander brought her the rudder it was coated in rust and looked horrible as an example. She didn’t want to use that in the video. So he did a quick green primer spray on it (most likely a zinc chromate) and Lynn started to cover it. Well, the MEK in the Poly Tak started removing that green primer, and during the class she commented if you look quickly in the video you can see the green bleeding through the white fabric! Ditto for any wooden stringers, plain varnish will not work, you need two part system to withstand the MEK!For marking on the fabric, only blue chalk or pencil should be used. I hadn’t realized it but red chalk is oil based. Suddenly dawned on me why I have problems with the red chalk on some home projects. To me the blue is harder to see, but not an issue on white fabric. Poly-Brush, the sealing coat on the fabric, is either available in a pink or clear. With the pink it was very easy to see what area of the fabric was coated, but also tended to drip. I had planned on leaving the interior roof open to the fabric on the Bearhawk, but realize if I do that I need to be quick with
