Went to skycraft today and purchased a cable with a 9 pin D connector on the end. They did not have female 9 pin connectors. Cut the cable and stripped the wires. Determined with a multi meter that as VIEWED FROM THE BACK: pin 2 is the orange wire pin 3 is the red wire pin 5 is the black wire
The orientation is important because the Dynon wiring diagram shows the pin assignments as pin 5 = grd (black) pin 3 Serial RX pin 2 Serial TX
The 9 pin conductor has numbers molded into the exposed face.
I called Dynon and Spoke with Steve in support. He advised that there have been two fireware updates since my version which is 1.1.0
I know my version is 1.1.0 because I followed Steves instructions to determine that from the setup menu on the D6.
Steve advised as follows:
The GPS must not be connected during firmware updates or it will screw up the firmware to the point that the unit must be returned to the factory. That is the case even if the GPS uint is OFF. However, if the cable is unhooked from the GPS it will not cause a problem.
My plan, at this point, is to connect both the GPS and PC wires to pin 22 and to disconnect the Garmin 396 when I do a firmware update.
I will probably need a serial to usb connector since serial connectors on PC's are a thing of the past.
I located the yellow/green wire from the 396 wiring bundle and ran it through the service loop to a position behind the drop down shelf.
I determined that the female pins I have will most likely work to install the wires into the D6 connector. I will need to borrow the appropriate crimper from Dick Isherwood.
