I have the cowling at home in my garage. Tonight I taped the oil door area and cut it out with a dremel cut off wheel.
Research on VAF showed that the regular fiberglass oil door is flimsy and often blows open etc. The best method I could determine to address the oil door issue was to follow the advice of some posters to use a piece of aluminum as the functional oil door, with the fiberglass oil door attached to the top of the aluminum piece.
I had actually made an aluminum oil door to use in lieu of the fiberglass oil door supplied with the kit.
I cut down the aluminum oil door and sanded the edges till it just fits inside the oil door cutout. I taped the fiberglass oil door to the outside of the cowling and fitted the aluminum oil door to the bottom side. It fits well and I think the concept will work.
I carefully sanded the cowling at the edge of the oil door cutout so that the fiberglass oil door will fit flush. It will require some more cosmetic work.
