Brief Description:  cowl mounting strips for firewall

For some reason this part of the project was hard to get past. I suppose because it was confusing, not difficult. I reviewed the skybolt info again and pressed on. I drilled the mounting strips to the firewall and clecoed them, with the help of Martza Majstoravich.

I tried the top cowl for fit and discovered that I had to move the cowl line, where the top and bottom cowls meet, a bit on the starboard side. I had thoght that the bottom edge of the top cowl was 26 inches from the midpoint of the airframe. In fact, it is 25.75 inches from the midline. I remarked the cowl split point on the airframe.

The top cowling actually fits pretty well. That may change after the baffeling is installed.

I drilled pilot holes at points 3 1/8 in apart beginning at the midpoint of the airframe, 5/8 inch forward of the firewall flange edge.

I read on vansairforce.net that it is better not to scalllop the side and bottom mounting flanges. TO do so causes the cowling to hang up when it is being installed because it gets caught between the scallops. It is of course necessary to scallop the curved top mounting strip.
