Brief Description:  cowling

Jorge Martinez stopped by to help and look over the project. I worked on positioning of the cowl to determine the cowl line so that I could determine placement of the skybolt fasteners on the firewall mounting strip. I did a lot of measuring to determine the distance from the middle of the top of the firewall and make sure that the placement of the fasteners would be symetrical.

Jorge mentioned that he had read on VAF the suggestion that the hinges along the sides of the upper and lower cowl halves could be offset so that the solid area of the hinge would be between the upper and lower cowls, instead of the "teeth" being in that area. If you paint the hinge the same color as the cowl it would make almost an invisible joint.

After Jorge and I got back from the local EAA meeting and Jorge left, I researched on VAF and found that Nusiance had that arragement and found a link to the homepage of that airplane. Jorge send me a link to other information on the topic on VAF. I think I will do that. It will require me to purchase another hinge that is two inches wide instead of the 1.5 width that I have now. I can use one narrower strip on the bottom cowl and the wider strip on the top. A suggestion on VAF was to have the recessed portion on the bottom cowl so that the hinge would not snag on the prop when the bottom cowl is removed.
