Brief Description:  Closing the Stab Skin

Today I decided to correct the misstake I made on the horizontal stabilizer skin. I cutout two 40mm strips of .016 aluminum and bent then to shape. Next I cut stab skin overhangs leaving equal amounts on each side and ensuring I had plenty of rivet spacing. Then I slid the stips underneath the skin on each end and lined them up so that I had the required 20mm of overhange to install the fiberglass tips. I then marked, drilled and clecoed the strips in place. I also made a lap joint jig out of wood that will allow me to make a slight 5 degree bend of the edge of the aluminum skin provided a more finished look to any lap joint. I used this jig tool to form the outside edges of both the skin and the extra strips. Once I was happy with the looks of the strips, I removed the Clecos, deburred and applied Cortex primer to the matting surfaces. After the primer dried, I reassembled the strips and Clecoed the Stab. Finally I riveted the top surface of the stab completing the main structure. All that is left to do is to prep the fiberglass tips and attach them to the horizontal stabilizer.
