Brief Description: Spar cap clean-up/spar riveting
I cleaned/de-burred the spar caps using a combination of emery cloth and Scotch-Brite pads. This did a good job of cleaning the caps up.
I started riveting the spar today, too. I have decided to jump around and rivet different areas of the spar in hopes of reducing the tendency of the spar to warp when riveted. I also gave up on using the pneumatic rivet gun and have decided to go with the bolt/hammer method. I have much better control and results using this method.
The first rivets in the center of the spar went in fine. I ran into some trouble riveting on the inboard end of the spar. This required me to use a smaller bolt to fit up next to an angle that was in the way. Instead of the rivet squishing down squarely, the rivet pushed off to one side. I got through two rivets that went this way and decided to stop. I need to figure out why this is happening. My guess is either I need to use a larger/heavier bolt or the rivet is too long and needs to be trimmed. I will try the larger bolt first.
Pounding the first spar rivets.
The rivet gauge says it's good!
Not so good on these rivets. They'll have to be drilled out.
