I decided I wanted to get some of the fine sandpaper marks out of the piston rods. I had started with coarse sandpaper originally, but wouldn't do that again. I would start with medium. Anyway I took them down the street to Steve Marsh. We considered putting them in the lathe, but it seemed like anything would leave a mark on the part. Steve suggested using his buffing wheel with grinding compound. It took a while, but the rods have a mirror finish now and slide nicely in the 0-rings in the shock strut caps. One rod still has a small longitudinal scratch, but it's reduced from what it was and should be ok. Between the sanding and polishing I thought the parts might end up slightly undersize, but a check with the calipers indicates that's not the case.
