Brief Description:  Prop pitch, first engine run etc

Fred Weaver came down from Sutter Creek to assist with all of the final details for the first start-up of the Rotax motor, the prop pitch setting, carb sync etc. He is also going to be the test pilot for the first flight.

Fred has learned a method of prop pitch setting using an electronic smart level and a laser torpedo level. With the plane sitting in level flight attitude you rotate one of the prop blades until the leading edge of the blade is exactly level (parallel to the ground). You next mark the blade 10" in from the tip. Next place the smart level against the backside of the blade and adjust the blade until the desired prop pitch is attained. Snug two of the outboard hub bolts to hold the blade in posiiton. Next, use the torpedo level laser, laying the torpedo unit against the back of the blade with the laser beam pointed down at the ground. Pivot the laser in an arc while holding it tightly against the back of the blade and have an assistant use a sharpie to make marks on the ground exactly where the laser light point hits. This will provide a short (3" or so) line on the ground. Next rotate the prop until the next blade is in the same position as the first blade, exactly paralled to the ground (level). Mark the blade at 10" in from the tip, then place the laser torpedo level against the back of the blade, rotate the blade until the laser dot falls on the line drawn on the ground. Snug the bolts and move on to the third blade. Repeat the adjustment process described above.

Next rotate the prop and re-check all three blades against the reference line on the ground using the laser. Make any adjustments necessary until all three blades are aligned. Tighten the hub per the manufacturers directions. Re-confirm the alignment of the blades using the laser.

Next we did the Rotax directed pre-start preperations including adding the appropriate oil to the motor, pre-filling the oil filter, oil cooler and oil lines, filling the coolant etc. We also re-confirmed the sttting of the throttle
