Brief Description:  Trim strips etc

I am continuing to do the triming and fitting of the windshield trim strips. The lower-front strip is about finished. I started on the side strips that run down the door post, and attach the sides of the windshield to the structure. First I fitted the aluminum "Z-Strip" that locates inside the front door post and is used to clamp the windshield to the frame tube. I then drilled the windscreen with holes to match the Z-strip. Next is the fitting and drilling of the outter trim piece.

Unfortunately, I discovered that the stock strips for the sides just are not right for the thicker acrylic windscreen, at least in my application. They are made of 0.025 material, and are a little too flimsy, plus they do not quite cover everything they should on my installation. I am going to use machine screws fastening the trim strip, the windscreen and Z-strip together, and am concerned that the very thin trim strip will allow pressure points to develop on the acrylic.

I headed to the airport and consulted with my friendly neighborhood A&P/IA, award-winning, multi-time Reno Air Race Biplance class champion and experimental plane guru, Tom Aberle. He agreed that it would probably be a good idea to use a little stouter material, and he dug up what I needed from his material racks.

Back at my shop I marked out the new material, then cut it to shape on the bandsaw. Some handwork with a file and emory cloth, and it was time to fit the strips and match drill them to the windshield and Z-strip. Susie came out to assist with the drilling and cleco-ing of the trim strip. We finished one side, but ran out of time.
