Brief Description:  Boot cowl and wiring

Today I removed the boot cowl and did some final wiring work. I ran a power line to a switch for future use (landing lights). I also did some additional work securing the assorted wiring behind the panel and through the cockpit.

I fabricated a coax cable for the transponder antenna, installed it and secured it in place.

I am trying to determine where to install the GPS and XM antennas for the panel-docked Garmin 496. I had orginally intended to place them on top of the glare shield, but in trial fitting them determined that this was not appropriate. The XM antenna is fairly large, and looked out of place on top of the glare shield. It also had little or no clearance from the windscreen, and would have made windscreen cleaning difficult.

I checked through my photos of other builders planes for ideas. Bill Lind has his GPS antenna mounted to the skylight with a suction cup mount. I contacted Joel Milloway who mounts his GPS antenna beneath the glare shield on a purpose-built mount. After trail positioning, thinking, considering and generally over-thinking this issue, I have decided to mount the antennas up in the structure above the cockpit. Both units will have unobstructed views of the sky (and direct views of the satellites if the Russians don't knock them all down), and I will be able to easily access the XM antenna for quick removal. I am using an AirGizmo antenna dock for the XM antenna so I can move the antenna with the GPS to other planes, cars and motorcycles. If I am going to pay for XM service, I want to be able to use it as much as possible.
