Brief Description:  Fabricate wing stands

I decided to fabricate wing stands to make painting the wings much easier. After studying several suggested methods I decided to try using engine stands as the basis for rolling, rotating wing stands.

I purchased 4 engine stands from Harbor Freight. Keith DeCuir modified the stands by adding a section to the main vertical member. He welded the extensions into place.

Keith also machined one adaptor unit for one of the stands. This unit had a cobalt-steel rod that can be inserted into the bolt/screw hole at the end of the wing. The cobalt-steel is very strong and capable of supporting the weight of the wing.

I was concerned about moving the wings around and wanted something that attached more securely to the wings. I used 1" square tubing and bolts to make attachment hardware for the other three wing ends. I have included a series of photos depicting the stands and the attachment hardware. The photos also show the masking of the wing root opening.
