Brief Description:  Main Weels and Brakes

Mount the main wheels on the gear leg.The Cleveland brake mounting plate for the left wheel had to be sanded some more to fit on the U-403. The following steps were used for both main gears: a. Slip the U-403 on both axles, install the allen head screw, the 3 washers, the nut and torque the bolt. b. Mount the U-810, U-408 spacers and Cleveland mounting flange to the U-403 brake mounting flange using 3 AN4-11A bolts and 1 AN4-5A bolt. The AN4-5A bolt does not run through the U-810 and U-408 spacer. Torque all the bolts to 70 in.-pounds.The gap between the brake pad and the U-810 is within 0.032-0.094 as specified. c. Fit the 5:00 x 5 Cleveland wheels and U-405 Axle spacers (one on each side of the wheel) on the axle. Install the VA-106 wheel nut. Tighten this nut untill there is no side play in the wheel, but it still rotates smoothly. Then through the cutter pin hole in the nut mark the position of the cotter pin on the axle on both side, using a long 1/8" drill bit.Remove the nut and the wheel and drill a 1/8" hole both side of the axle. d. Reinstall the wheel and install the cotter pin. e. Remove the inboard brake shoe from the brake caliper, and bolt the caliper to the mounting flange. The brake is mounted with the caliper aft of the axle, and the bleed nipple down. Install the U-808 on the wheel nut.
