I pushed Thumper outside to validate the changes I made to the Bendix gear on the starter. Previously, I filed a 'ramp' on the Bendix gear in the hopes that is would engage the ring gear better. Initially, it seemed to help but soon it rarely engaged. I visited an auto supply store and looked at their Subaru starters. Their Bendix gear had the 'ramp' on the opposite side of the tooth ifrom the one I grounded. So, I had nothing to lose, ground another 'ramp' on the other side of the tooth.
