Brief Description:  Real home building in Mississippi

No airplane construction this weekend. Instead, I went to Gulfport, Mississippi with 9 other church members to help rebuild a home damaged by hurricane Katrina. The home of Darryl and Brenda lost its roof (everything down to the ceiling) in the hurricane. They have been living in what is left of their carport. They were horribly underinsured and could only manage to pay for a new roof. Although the house is now dry, it is still unliveable. A previous crew from our church tore out all of the soggy insulation and ceiling dry wall the weekend before. This weekend we replaced the batt insulation in the ceiling and installed dry wall ceilings in most of the house. Although 2 days on a ladder lifting 12 foot sheets of dry wall left me sore and spent, it was inspiring to witness the grace and determination of Darryl and Brenda. We left the home on Sunday afternoon. Before the 8 hour drive home, we detoured to see the beach area of Gulfport and Biloxi. The extent of destruction is almost unimaginable. Huge churches and hospitals are in ruins. Thousands of homes are completely gone and only the foundations remain in the ground. Mounds of debris were washed into the Gulf of Mexico, where they still remain. Your first impression is that it looks like an atomic bomb went off. Then, after travelling miles down the coast, you think that it would take scores of atomic bombs to wreck that kind of havoc. We arrived home late Sunday night and I was truly thankful to sleep in my warm and dry queen sized bed. I thought about working on the plane Monday evening, but I was just too tired and sore. I will get back in the swing this week, before I leave for Sun-N-Fun next Sunday. One thing is for sure, however. My first cross country trip after Miss Vick is finished will be to Gulfport to check on my friends.
