Brief Description: Started on the aileron torque tubes

This past weekend I had a great time flying to Spartanburg, S.C. with my best friend, Jim Anderson, in my Cessna Skyhawk ("Princess"). We went up to see Jim's daughter, Caroline, ride in an intercollegiate hunter-jumper horse show. It was a beautiful flight and I really enjoyed seeing Caroline ride in the big leagues. With three boys, Caroline is the daughter Vicki and I never had. I felt so proud to see her ride so confidently, even though she is just a freshman. The trip home was equally beautiful, flying into the sunset. In the Skyhawk, it took us just over an hour each way, instead of the three hour drive by car. I could not help but think that an RV would make it closer to 30 minutes. Back in the shop tonight, Monday, I tackled the aileron push tubes. Vicki helped me measure and mark the tubes and I cut them to length on the band saw. I would normally use the tubing cutter, but it will not cut a straight line anymore (it sort of spirals down the tube) so it is going in the trash. Then, I cut a small scrap of aluminum strip to the length corresponding to the circumfrence of the tube and marked 6 dots equidistant around the tube circumfrence. Taping the strip to the tube, I drilled through the dots into the tube, making 6 equidistant holes around the tube. Then, I placed the rod end fitting into the ends of the tubes and drilled the fittings to the same holes. It was a real bear to remove the fittings after they were drilled. Then, I deburred all of the holes. I will need to buy some self etching primer to prime the inside and outside of the tubes before I rivet the rod end fittings in place.
