Brief Description:  Fabricated elevator up stop

Tonight I finished trimming the horizontal stabilizer skins at the end so that the elevators would swing freely. To accomplish this, I had to take the elevators on and off several times. Installing the elevators with nuts and bolts would have been a royal pain in the patootie. Luckily, I had some "hinge pins" that were invented by a resourceful builder several years ago. It consists of an angled pin that is 3/16" in diameter (the same as an AN3 bolt). One end of the pin is tapered so that it is easy to fit into a tight hole. The other end is threaded so that it can be threaded onto a handle. The handle and pin combination can then be fitted into the hole that was designed for an AN-3 bolt. Then, you simply unscrew the pin from the handle and voila, the hinge is pinned without all of the muss and fuss of nuts and bolts. Of course, final assembly is done with the nuts and bolts. Next, I measured the up travel and the down travel of the elevators with my digital level. Neither elevator was in the acceptable range for either up travel or down travel. First, I tackeled up travel. I began to trim away (a little at a time) the elevator up stop until I got the correct range of up angle on the elevators. Here, I learned that the elevator horns are not exactly lined up, so the right side elevator stop was trimmed less than the left side elevator stop. In the end, they both swung out to about 28 degrees of up travel. The acceptable range is 25 to 30 degrees.
