Brief Description: Played hooky on the motorcycle

It has been well documented that my friend, Bob Zahner, is a bad influence on me. Instead of working on my plane today, he convinced me to take a day long motorcycle trip with him and fellow EAAer David Rowe, up to the north Georgia mountains. It was a beautiful day, although hot, and we braved the tourist traffic till we got to the real twisty roads. At that point, most of the cars (and all of the Harleys) seemed to disappear on the road and we had a leisurly ride. We did not do any of the boy racer stuff, just enjoyed the scenery and the beautifully curved pavement. Midway through our ride, we came upon High Valley Airport, a 2,000 foot grass strip set next to rental cabins. It looks like a real nice place to come back and visit with the RV. We ended up in the little "Alpine" village of Helen, GA, where city fathers figured many years ago that they could bolster local revenues by holding the town out as little bit of Bavaria right here in Georgia. While the original concept was quaint and tasteful, the town has grown into a little bit of a tourist trap, complete with traffic jams and tattoo parlors. But at least we found a good German restaurant and had a great late lunch of German meats, brats and sauerkraut. After being on the bike for the better part of 7 hours, I had an acute case of "rareus rumpus", but it was worth the experience.
