Brief Description:  Muffed the firewall!

This morning before I went to work I was doing my morning workout on the treadmill in front of the television. Instead of watching the Today show, I decided to watch the George Orndorf video on fuselage construction. I have seen it before, but I thought I could watch the segment on the center section. As I was about to fast forward by the firewall segment (after all, I have already completed the firewall) to my horror, I saw that George had placed all of the engine mount weldments and angle stiffeners of the side of the firewall opposite the flange. I had riveted them on the side with the flange. I wanted to barf. The firewall, now dimpled in the wrong direction, is totally trashed, as are the angle stiffeners. The only parts I could save were the engine mount weldments. Looking at the plans and the instructions, it is not at all clear which way the flange goes on the firewall. I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right, but I chose poorly. Oh well, I ordered the $180 worth of parts, drilled out the weldments and resolved to read the drawings more carefully in the future. Tonight, I worked on the center section again, drilling and riveting the uprights to the forward center section. Then, I marked and drilled the aft center section for the rudder cables. Last, I fabricated two of the angles and shims that will be riveted to the web of the center section. It is a good thing that I have other parts to work on while I await shipment of the new firewall and stiffeners.
