Brief Description:  Fit and drilled out fuel tanks

Today was a really big day. It started out badly because I woke up with some sort of intestinal flu. I felt poorly, but working in the shop all day helped keep my mind off of my stomach. As I worked in the basement, Patrick (my 21 year old son, home from his mechanical engineering studies at Auburn) and his friend, Ross Boner, decided to try to get my derelict Triumph Spitfire running. I told Patrick that if he could get it on the road, we would sell it and I would split the profit with him. Patrick and Ross got the engine running, replaced the clutch slave cylinder and rebuilt the clutch master cylinder. Below is a picture of Ross and Patrick after taking the Spit on a test drive in the neighborhood and running out of gas.I started the day by cutting and deburring the tank stiffeners. I then drilled the stiffeners to the right tank skin. Then, I began the laborious process of fitting and clecoing the tank ribs into the right tank skin. This went a little easier than the left tank, because I am learning how to finess the ribs in instead of using brute force.Once the right tank was assembled and clecoed, I fit it to the Z brackets on the right wing, as per Dan Checkoway's plan. I then drilled out the Z brackets and drilled the strip which joins the leading edge skin to the tank skin (#19 drill). I also drilled out the strip for the left wing, which I had neglected to do earlier.I then drilled out all of the skins, ribs, tank baffles and stiffeners for both tanks. For a brief moment, I had the leading edges and tanks on both wings. It looked great! However, I know that I still have a lot of construction to go on the wings.
