Brief Description:  Belly skin redux

Last night I attended our EAA Chapter 690 Christmas dinner and had a great time. At the dinner, however, Jamie Painter told me that he saw my safety wiring job on the log and that I had it backward. DOH! Today, I went back and cut out all of the safety wiring on the belly bolts and wired them (I think) correctly. I have included a photo of my wiring job next to the illustration from the manual. I hope this is right. Also, yesterday I received my new belly skin from Vans. A $40 part took $20 in shipping. Oh, well. Thankfully, Jim Anderson came over to help me install the new belly skin. The edge distance on the rivet holes in the side part of the skins was a real adventure. Jim had the idea of tapping on the corners of the skins with a ball peen hammer (with an aluminum bar to shield the skin) to round over the corner and supply more skin to the side. It worked like a charm and we were able to drill the new belly pan with plenty of edge distance. Later, we disassembled everything to debur the holes and smooth the sides of the ribs and skins. Now, everything has been dimpled and is ready for prime. However, the plans suggest using a thin film of proseal between these parts, making priming a bit problematic. Proseal should not be applied over primer, but directly to aluminum. I will have to mask everything off so that the proseal will have bare aluminum to attach to.
