Brief Description:  Poppa's got a brand new prop!

This is a real red letter day. I was able to obtain a big (expensive) component of my project. From the beginning, I have wanted a constant speed propeller. It provides great climb and cruise performance, unlike a fixed pitch prop, which can be tailored to great climb performance and compromised cruise speeds or blistering cruise speeds with less than maximum takeoff and climbing ability. For me, a constant speed prop is even more necessary. When I eventually outfit my ship with the extra fuel tanks for transcontinental flight, I will need the performance of a constant speed prop to get all of that fuel weight off the ground and climbing at a reasonable rate. I will also be able to dial in a cruise setting which maximizes fuel mileage. The latest and greatest constant speed prop is the Hartzell "blended airfoil" prop. Van's sells it to RV builders cheaper than anyone else around ($6,090 plus $250 shipping). Last Friday, however, I was on the Vans Airforce web page and I saw that a local RV builder, Vic Syracuse, had a brand new blended airfoil constant speed prop for sale at $200 off that list price. So, after a visit to my bank and my home equity line, I bought the prop from Vic. In this way, I saved $200 off the price, $250 in shipping and $420 in sales tax. I also checked with Hartzell and they told me that it would be no problem to register me as the new owner. The one year warranty starts when I put it on the engine (to be obtained later) and have my first engine start. I told them that my first engine start was probably more than one year away, and they said that would be no problem. So, for the time being, my little prop will sit in the garage in its shipping box until I am ready to hang it on my future engine.
