My annual pilgrimage to Lakeland, Florida for the Sun-N-Fun flyin began a little early this year. The show started on Tuesday, but I drove to Ocala on Saturday for the annual RV flyin hosted by the Leeward Air Ranch, a flyin community. The Air Ranch has a 5,000 foot beautiful grass runway, surrounded by houses with hangers. All of the streets are aircraft friendly and taxiing airplanes have the right of way over cars. The flyin was wonderful, with over 50 RVs in attendance. I had the opportunity to speak with many RV builders/flyers and received many building tips. I met Ray Parker, an RV-8A builder and Leeward resident. I also got to see, once again, what I consider to be one of the most beautiful RV-8s in existence, the polished ship belonging to Norm Pesch. We all broke for a really nice BBQ lunch. After the flyin, I drove to Winter Haven, where I got a motel room for the Sun-N-Fun week. I had a few days before the show started, so I hung out at the pool and toured the Lakeland-Orlando area.
