Brief Description:  Sam and I finish the cockpit side skins

Once again Sam was without adult supervision, so he came over after dinner to help finish the cockpit side skins. We finished riveting the aft two rows of rivets on these skins and then we tackled the curved portion of the skins that wrap around the lower longeron. The right side needed some shims between the bulkheads and the skins, so riveting was a bit of a challenge. When we got to the left side, however, the challenge was even greater. There, the gap between the curved skin and the bulkheads was over 1/8" thick. At first, I stacked three shims between the skin and the bulkhead, but that looked awful. Then, we decided to drill out those rivets, chuck the stacked shims and we fabricated thicker shims out of .040" aluminum plate. That worked a lot better. When all was said and done, the skins looked great. I think this is the last work I will get to do on the project before Sun-N-Fun next week. I had hoped to finish the skins and take the fuselage out of the jig before then, but I figure I have only about three nights of work to get to that stage. It will be great to go to the fly in.
