FedEx ground delivered the empennage kit today. Boy, was I excited! Vicki took my picture in front of the two boxes and then I opened them to find all of the aluminum parts carefully wrapped in white paper. The small hardware parts were stapled into labeled paper bags. I read the preliminary instructions and then proceeded to inventory the parts. Mark helped by calling out some of the parts while I found them in the box and then placed them on the shelves. I had one shelf each for the horizontal stabilizer, the vertical stabilizer, the elevators and the rudder. The skins were too large for the shelves, so I stored them nested on the bed of the radial arm saw. I opened each bag of hardware and placed the parts in a storage bin with multiple drawers. Using a tip I learned from a builder on the internet, I used the labels for each bag on each corresponding drawer. Since I had read the preliminary instructions many times from the preview plans, I started on the horizontal stabilizer rear spar assembly. I rounded the ends and finished the edges of the spar reinforcements (HS-609PP ) and then finished the edges of the spar channels. I used the scotchbrite wheel on the drill press. It worked great. I have decided to record the time I work on the plane, including clean up of the shop and making entries into the builder’s log each session. I had fun tonight. Many hundreds of nights and weekends to go, but the fun is in the journey. Each day I work will be one day closer to our first flight. We still have not decided on a name for N888SV yet. It might take a while for her to take on a personality so that we can select an appropriate name.
