Brief Description:  No Construction, Vacation in Virginia Beach

Vicki and I took the week off to visit my son, Drew, and daughter in law, Anna, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Drew is attending law school up there at Regent University. Anna is a pharmaceutical sales person with Pfizer. We had a wonderful time, visiting the sites in Virginia Beach and nearby Williamsburg. The greatest experience, however, came when we went to Kittyhawk, NC (only about 45 minutes south of Va. Bch.) and took hang gliding lessons on the giant sand dunes close to where Wilbur and Orville first experimented with gliders. I could not believe that Vicki would even consider hang gliding, but she readily agreed when Anna suggested it. We had a blast. First, we took a class which lasted about an hour. There, we learned the fundamentals and saw an inspiring video about hang gliding. Then, we trudged up the dunes and our instructor strapped us in to a hang glider. Once the landing area was clear, we simply ran down the dunes till the wing lifted us up off the slope. Flights lasted about 10 to 15 seconds, then we would push the control bar up and away to flare for a landing on your feet. Even belly landings on the soft sand were fun. All in all, we had five flights each. Vicki even said that she wants to continue lessons. The next step is to have the glider towed to 2,000 feet by an ultralight and it is flown down in tandem with an instructor strapped in beside you. What a great vacation.
