Brief Description:  Wing skin prep, day two

The second night in what is sure to be many nights of wing skin preparation. First, I finished deburring the last bottom wing skin (there are 4) and then scuffed the inside face to prepare it for primer. It is much easier to scuff the surface with scotchbrite before it is dimpled, so you do not have to work your way around the dimples. Then, I dimpled the first wing skin (the lower inboard skin). I started by dimpling all of the rivet holes with a 3/32 dimple die. Then, I went to dimple the #8 screw holes (around the inspection plates) and discovered that the #8 screw dimple die did not fit easily into the hole. It should fit snugly, but you should not have to force it. Completely out of character, I did not proceed to simply bash the tight fitting dimple die in the screw holes. I checked the part number of the die to make sure it was really the #8 screw die (it was). Then, I checked the chart to determine the size hole I was supposed to drill (a #19 drill bit). Last night, I had drilled the #8 screw holes out with a #19 drill bit (or so I thought). I rechecked the bit and found that it was really a #20 bit, ever so slightly smaller than a #19 bit (I know this just has you on the edge of your seats). So, I went back and redrilled all of the #8 screw holes to the #19 bit and deburred the holes once again. Now, the dimple die fit like a glove. Of course, all of the dimpling with the C-Frame dimpler created quite a racket when Vicki was trying to enjoy the American Idol kickoff show (two contestants were kicked off). Thankfully, she was a good sport. Good thing. I only have about another 3 gagillion holes left to dimple before this beast becomes airborne. I finished off the evening with a primer session, in which I cleaned and primed the inside of the skin. There are three more bottom wing skins and 4 more top wing skins to go (plus the two leading edge skins). If I do one skin a night, I could have this think knocked out in a few weeks, after which I can commence to riveting!
