Brief Description:  Flap Fillet Seals and Trim the Skylight

Today's exercise was to fit up the flap fillet components, and with them installed, determine where to trim the skylight.

The first task was to relieve the flap fillets so they would slide into place while clearing the rear wing spar mounts.

Although I have photos of the prototype S-20 showing the trim strip at the rear of the skylight trimmed short, I decided to leave the trim strip a little long so it is captured by the flap fillet.

Since the front edge of the flap fillet can't be seen when it is in place, I used a peice of plastic I cut from the cover sheet to a business report. I cut it to the shape of the fillet, then taped the rear of it in place on the fillet. When I put the fillet in place, I was able to lift the plastic on top of the rear trim strip, showing me exactly where it needed to be cut.

Once the fillets are in place, the overhang of the skylight area can be determined and trimmed. I measured it at the back, and found that to match up with the fillets, I would have about 3/4" overlap onto the root portion of the wing. I just maintained this 3/4" overlap the entire length from the back to the front of the wing.

I still have the protective plastic sheeting on my skylight making it impossible to directly see the root edge of the wing, so I used a flashlight to shine through the skylight and marked the shadow of the wing.
