Brief Description:  Installed the Wings!

An exciting day!!

The airport where my plane will reside is about 35 minutes from my house, and my tools, etc. To avoid the hassle of constant trips back and forth between the two places I wanted to finish the plane as far as possible before I move it. This meant I needed to install the wings so I can finish up the windshield and skylight. I will need to remove the wings for transport, so the final rigging will take place at the airport.

My shop is just big enough for the assembled plane, so we spent the first part of the day just moving some stuff around so we had room to work.

The actual installation went well, except for the aluminum bushing I used as a drill jig on the front spar (per the manual). I put considerable effort into making sure it fit well without binding, but under actual use it got stuck - twice... The first time was without the wing in place (during a test fit), and we destroyed it getting it out, so had to make a new one. The first wing went perfect, but then it got stuck again in the second wing. I ended cutting the end off, pulling the wing back, and tapping the bushing out with a long rod and a hammer. In the end, it did the job, but not without some aggravations. I am not sure what I would do different here, but maybe I would try a stainless bushing. The aluminum I used seemed soft enough it would gall, and the fit was tight enough that it would lock up tight at that point.

I used a panel lift to hold the wings up while we got everything fit up and bolted. This worked perfectly. The wing would balance on the lift, but we could move it enough to get things lined up, and the wheels let us test fit the front spar while pulling it back enough to get the dremel and files in there to adjust the fit.
